Maria Carbonell - GRSP Student for 2019-2020

Welcome Maria Carbonell! Maria is our GA Rotary Student Program (GRSP) student from Colombia. Will and Machelle Watt are her host parents this school year as she studies at VSU. The GRSP program was started by my grandfather, William Watt, Sr., in 1946 and since its founding has brought 3,650 students from around the world to study at Georgia colleges and universities.

District Conference - Save the Date!

Planning is well underway for next April’s District Conference on beautiful Jekyll Island. We have secured room blocks at the Westin, Home2 Suites, Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn (along with the Days Inn for the GRSP attendees).

The link to book your hotel is active on the district website. Or click this link and it will take you right there: https://rotary6900.org/v2/page/525. Several clubs have already booked their rooms so don’t delay. It’s going to be a fun weekend, filled with Rotary fellowship and inspiration PLUS some beach time!

Don’t forget the Taste of the District on Thursday night. Is there a recipe your club or town is known for? Get the recipe and send it to lyoung285@earthlink.net. We’ll gather the best ones to kick off the weekend.

This is your chance to Connect with Rotary. Don’t miss it!

Annual United Way Golf Outing

Hospice and Palliative Care: What’s the Difference?

Join Mark Lowe, Jessica Burns, Palliative Medicine Nurse Practitioner, and Sheri Walters, the Administrator of Hospice of Southwest Georgia will present information on Hospice and Palliative care.

Hospice Of Southwest Georgia is a Freestanding Hospice care center situated at Thomasville, Georgia. This palliative care is medicare certified. Hospice Of Southwest Georgia accommodated approx. 324 Medicare beneficiaries whose average age was 80.5 years. The mission of the Hospice of Southwest Georgia since it’s beginning in 1989, is to provide comprehensive care for patients with life-limiting conditions, within the familiar surroundings of one's own home or home-like setting. Hospice offers support services to the family as well as the patient. Education and emotional support for the family members during the illness and bereavement support afterwards are an important part of the scope of hospice care.

When a member of your family is facing a life-limiting illness, Hospice of Southwest Georgia can help patients and families by providing the support you need.

  • Respite care for the caregiver
  • Medical equipment and medications related to hospice diagnosis
  • Education on illness

  • Supportive emotional care for the family and caregivers
  • Spiritual support
  • Assistance with advance directives
  • Assistance obtaining community resources
  • Support during and after the “journey of life”

  • Pet therapy
  • Patients receive fresh flowers from our volunteers each week
  • Camp Heal annual camp for bereaved children ages 6-17

Hospice of Southwest Georgia serves the following counties: Thomas, Grady, Mitchell, Brooks, and Colquitt

Andy Jones - "Can you not see?"

Thank you Andy for sharing the film about the integration of the high schools in Thomas County. The documentary featured the football coaches and others that helped manage the atmosphere around Thomasville in 1970. It highlighted all the positives of conscious community involvement while avoiding the obvious conflicts of the forced integration. The program was informative and inspiring.
