TaxAide is dedicated to providing totally free tax preparation to low, and moderate, income families in southwest Georgia. The service is delivered by a partnership between the IRS, AARP, Thomasville Rotary, Thomas County Library, Thomas University and community volunteers. Last year the program served 350 clients which resulted in direct refunds of over $300,000 with a dollar stimulus of $1,000,000 for the local economy.
A key element is the involvement of Thomas University where the program is an integral part of the University’s Accounting and Finance curriculum allowing students to gain hands on work experience, community service and a step on the path to permanent employment after graduation. Another key element is the involvement of community volunteers. Because of its positive reputation, the program has been embraced by the community with volunteers signing up because they, as they have stated, want to be a part of doing good.
For the coming tax year, the goal is to serve 400 clients. We believe we can accomplish this by adding a partner from the business community where employees would be encouraged, allowed and paid while participating in the program. We will also be reaching out, in Spanish, to the Latino community. We feel it is a necessity to involve this sector of the community if we are to serve our total community.
As Freddie and Ophelia Waters of Valdosta stated their written note, “Can’t thank you enough. May God Bless you.”
