TaxAide is dedicated to providing totally free tax preparation to low, and moderate, income families in southwest Georgia. The service is delivered by a partnership between the IRS, AARP, Thomasville Rotary, Thomas County Library, Thomas University, Envision Credit Union and community volunteers. From its award winning first year as the best new program in District 6900, TaxAide has served over 1,000 families resulting in direct refunds over $750,000 with a dollar stimulus over $3 million for the local economy.
A key element is the involvement of Thomas University where the program is an integral part of the University’s Accounting and Finance curriculum allowing students to gain hands on work experience, community service and a step on the path to permanent employment after graduation. Another key element is the involvement of community volunteers. Because of its positive reputation, the program has been embraced by the community with volunteers signing up because they, as they have stated, want to be a part of doing good.
For this tax season, the goal is to serve 400 families. To ensure we meet this goal we have added a partner, Envision Credit Union, from the business community. They encourage and, subsequently, are allow their employees to take off during business hours to and pay them when they do.
We have also reached out, in Spanish, to the Latino community with good success. Latino families with limited English proficiency are being served. We felt it was necessary to involve this sector of the community.
