During the Fall of 2018 the Rotary Club of Thomasville collaborated with Rose City Toastmasters and the Thomasville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity to expand their Youth Leadership program to include the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program.
Rotarians Walter Marria, Jr, Andre Marria, Nathaniel Abrams, Adrian Burns and Art Allen took the lead to establish the relationship with Rose City Toastmasters to establish the collaborative relationship. In accordance with the Toastmaster curriculum guidelines, Walter and Andre Marria will serve as Co-coordinators in the implementation of the sessions. The goal is to train fifty Kappa League mentees, 13-18 years of age, in the art of public speaking and leadership. Members of Kappa Alpha Psi are excited to have the additional community support.
Startup was delayed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in late 2018. The first meeting was not held until February 2019. The Kappa League chose Fifty Young Men to participate in the eight-week program, with an average class size of (15) participants, and an overall goal of three graduating classes at the conclusion of the program. The first cycle of the program has exactly (15) of the Kappa League high school age mentees. The MNW Boys & Girls Clubs of SWGA Teen Center, has donated space in their facility for all sessions.
This is a fine example of Rotarian's experiences being used to enhance the speaking ability of our future leaders which is what vocational service is all about.
