What You Missed Last Week!

If you were not able to attend last week’s meeting, you missed a real treat. Rotarian Jay Flowers was the program, but we also received the latest news on the upcoming Rose Show and Festival from Madison Eaton. In addition to these events, Darren Ellis did his classification talk and Greg Owens gave us fire department news.

Jays slide presentation included club projects and activities carried out by past Rotarians. He highlighted past members who played key roles in helping the club grow and expand its vision. This is the second in a series of presentations Jay is doing leading up to the clubs centenary celebration. Thanks, Jay, for sharing the roots of our club with us.

Madison Eaton is the Special Events Coordinator for the city of Thomasville. She assured us that the Rose Show will go on. There will be no marching bands and floats, but there will be plenty of activities for the three-day event. The activities kick off with the Thomasville Police Department Inspection and throughout the three days, there will be something for everyone.

Darren Ellis comes to us by way of Nicholls Georgia. Darren grew up on his family's farm and attended Valdosta State University after graduation from high school. He majored in finance and is employed by Ameris Bank in Thomasville. Darren is married and has three children. He and his family have lived in Thomasville for about four years.

Greg Owens, Thomasville Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief, shared with us the work and training Fire and Rescue engaged in for the year 2020. His information shows why the Thomasville Fire Department is one of the best departments in the state and the southeast . Thomasville is really blessed to have such great people as first responders. “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.”

News from the Board

Following are highlights from the April 8 meeting of your Board of Directors:

  • In a year when the pandemic and life in general has taken its toll on our club membership, we are pleased to welcome back to the club Warren Ballard. After a brief absence, Warren is returning from Jacksonville and to Thomasville Rotary. Welcome back, Warren!
  • Please plan to attend the Club Assembly scheduled for Thursday, May 13. At this special club meeting, all Directors will introduce their Committee Chairs and provide updates on all of the club’s projects and initiatives.
  • In addition to the Club Assembly, there will be two other special meetings in May… neither of which will be conducted at the plaza:
    • On the evening of May 6, our special anniversary celebration event will be held at the new Marriott Courtyard Hotel in place of a lunch meeting that day.
    • On May 20, our Thursday lunch meeting will be held at the Biscuit Co., and our meal will be catered by 2019 SPARK Thomasville winner, Climmie Mosley. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of enjoying Climmie’s incredible bbq, you’ll not want to miss this meeting!

This Week's Program

The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s most outstanding instructors. The award has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields. Formerly known as the Commissioner’s Award of Excellence, the award was renamed in honor and memory of Thomas “Rick” Perkins, an instructor at West Georgia Technical College.
