This Week's Program - AT THE BISCUIT CO

Russell Deese will bring his unique speaking style and fun stories to entertain us. Wars may come and wars may go, but the vehicle that carried soldiers to the battlefield never die. At least that's the goal of Russell's Military Vehicles.

"It's our way of honoring history. We see old jeeps the way God sees people, not for what they are, but what they can be. That gives us the desire to see a jeep reworked and looking battlefield-ready again. The military vehicles are a 3-D representation of history."

"As I started this 'hobby gone mad', it all began as a child. My dad had a salvage yard in the 40's through the 60's; that was the atmosphere in which I was raised in since 1962 in Live Oak, FL. I have been working on jeeps for as long as I can remember. I started building, restoring, and repairing jeeps as my occupation in 1984. Several of the restorations we have completed are in museums from the east coast to the west coast. We have provided vehicles and accessories for movie props and reenactments."

NOTE:  This program will NOT be ZOOMed this week due to change in venue.

What You Missed Last Week!

With the Rotary Club of Thomasville now full grown, at the grand old age of 100, we can look backward to where we have come from, and look forward to where we are going. Debbie Goodman took us back to something we did quite well over the past year. For the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP), we surpassed our goal by 20%. We all agree, it was a di*cult year. But as the lyrics from one song say, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

In addition to the club’s generous GRSP giving over the last year, several Rotarians received recognition for donations that moved them to another level. We had a total of nineteen awards for the year. Ten of these were presented at last week’s meeting. Great job fellow Rotarians.

There were two students form Thomas County Central High School recognized as students of the month. The Technology Student of the Month was Daniel Brock. He will be attending Valdosta State University to study Drafting Design. The Academic Student of the Month was Bradley Deckman, and he is attending Kennesaw State University to study Orthotic Training.

There are several members we want to keep in our thoughts and prayers. John Archer is home from the hospital. John Glenn will be leaving the hospital and going to Camellia Gardens. Susan O’Neal lost her mother last week. There may be others I’m not aware of.

News from the Board

Summary of highlights from the Thursday, May 13 Board of Directors meeting.

  • Satisfying one of the requirements of the Red Ribbon program, four Rotarians – Will Brown, Bonnie Hayes, Jamie Lawrence, and Dawna Bicknell-Tanner – attended the Board meeting as special guests.
  • President-Elect Wayne Newsome announced the make-up of his Board for the 2021-2022 Rotary year. Members of this year’s Board and next year’s Board will gather together for a Joint Board Meeting on June 10.
  • President John Brown announced that a Club Assembly will be conducted on Thursday, May 27. In place of our regular club meeting agenda on that date, all Directors will report to the club on their respective areas of responsibility during the 2020-2021 Rotary year. This Club Assembly is a great opportunity to learn more about all the many ways in which Thomasville Rotary is a force for good in our community and around the world. It’s also a great chance for newer members to see where they might be able to use their time and talents in service above self.
  • Past-President Kim Walden shared that the Rotary International Convention will be conducted virtually again this year on June 12-16. MacIntyre Park Middle School Students use their VOICE

Despite the fact that the pandemic created a remote-learning and remote socializing environment in schools all over the country, Be The Voice students still found a way to make a difference in their school and community. Such is the case with these amazing students at MacIntyre Park Middle School and their enthusiastic BTV leader Ms. Deidre McPherson. Pictured here are students who received their VIV (Very Important Voice) awards. Way to go MPMS students!
